Ralph Stanley's Clinch
Mountain Country pairs the bluegrass legend with a holy host of special guests,
from George Jones to Bob Dylan to Gillian Welch. Now in his 70s, Stanley still possesses

Midwest Book Review
Though officially one of the Confederate States, much of Upper East Tennessee remained
loyal to the Union. This loyalty was so fierce that it became necessary for The
Confederacy to occupy the area. Driven from their homes, many men slipped through
Confederate lines and joined the Union Army. The Thirteenth Regiment is one unit whose
roster consisted of these Loyal Lincolnites, primarily made up of men from Johnson and
Carter Counties. In this exciting volume, Captain Samuel Scott and his Adjutant, Samuel
Angel, chronicle the history of the War Between the States as they saw it, particularly
the actions of their Regiment as it fought for the North. Along with photographs of
several of the men there is a complete roster. The Regimental roll contains name, rank,
age at enlistment, dates of enlistment and muster in, promotion, capture, etc. A complete
name index has been added to this splendid reprint edition.

Card catalog description
This volume, a collection of letters written by an abolitionist businessman who lived in
East Tennessee prior to the Civil War, provides one of the clearest firsthand views yet
published of a region whose political, social, and economic distinctions have intrigued
historians for more than a century. Between 1841 and 1846, Birdseye expressed his views
and observations in letters to Gerrit Smith, a prominent New York reformer who arranged to
have many of them published in antislavery newspapers such as the Emancipator and Friend
of Man. Those letters, reproduced in this book, drew on Birdseye's extensive conversations
with slaveholders, nonslaveholders, and the slaves themselves. He found that East
Tennesseans, on the whole, were antislavery in sentiment, susceptible to rational
abolitionist appeal, and generally far more lenient toward individual slaves than were
other southerners. Opposed to slavery on economic as well as moral grounds, Birdseye
sought to establish a free labor colony in East Tennessee in the early 1840s and actively
supported the region's abortive effort in 1842 to separate itself from the rest of the
state.

True Civil War drama in the East Tennessee mountain region.
Daniel Ellis was a Unionist East Tennessean during the Civil War. An exiled fugitive for
participating in bridge burning, he took to guiding escaped prisoners, southern deserters,
slaves, and all manner of refugees through the mountains to the Union lines. He eventally
became captain of Company A in the 13th Regiment, Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, U.S.A.
"Thrilling Adventures" is Ellis' memoir, recounting the brutal hardships
he had to undure during his years on the run. Written shortly after the war, it is tainted
by his still-burning fury toward the Confederacy. The book has been criticized for
perceived exaggerations, but its true excesses are in its narrative style, full of
classical allusions and long-winded melodrama -- elements long since gone out of fashion.
Given its faults in narrative and Ellis' understandable lack of objectivity, the
book is an accurate account of life in souuthern Appalachia during the Civil War. The
region in that era is receiving increasing attention, most notably in Charles Frazier's
Cold Mountain (which acknowledges Ellis' Thrilling Adventures) and Cameron Judd's Mountain
War trilogy. For more information on Ellis, see "Captain Daniel Ellis: An
Annotated Bibliography" in the December 1996 issue of Bulletin of Bibliography.
